What is carrageenan used for in food production?

There are diverse food products eaten by humans. Many of these food substances are produced in very delicate, perishable forms. It is virtually impossible to walk into any grocery store and buy an edible product that does not have an additive. Generally, food additives refer to substances that are included in food to enhance taste, preserve the flavor and other qualities of such food. Some additives have been used for centuries while others are newly discovered. Some additives are of natural origin. Some others are synthetic in nature. It is however assumed that natural additives are better than the synthetic ones. There is another class that is referred to as the semi-synthetic additives.

For ages, there has been the application of salt to preserve bacon and sulfur dioxide to preserve wines. These are just a few of the ancient application of this technique of keeping food product for a long time. One of the natural products that have been used for decades to preserve food products is the carrageenan. This substance is found almost everywhere. In modern food production, it is widely used in the preservation of various food substances. It is used in the organic yogurt, coconut milk, tofu, and baby formula. It is even used for the preservation of raw animal products such as turkey cold cuts and bacon. Click here to know more about #what is carrageenan
